A Green Leap Day, 2024

Reading time: 2 minutes

Another leap year means another "leap day" has come and gone, and major US stock indices closed the extra day on a high note. The Dow Jones Industrials, the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ Composite all finished the extended month in the green - continuing their strong start to 2024 in which both the Dow and S&P in particular have passed notable milestones on a closing basis (38,000 and 5,000, respectively).

Did you know, this was the first leap day of trade since 2016? The last leap day (February 29, 2020) came on a Saturday, so the last official day of trade that fell on a leap day was February 29, 2016. On that day, the Dow and S&P both closed down, while the NASDAQ Composite finished in positive territory.
